Portrait XO is a transdisciplinary artist, musician, independent researcher, and data activist. From acoustic instrumentalist to their development into AI audiovisual art, their practice has evolved through extensive observation in computational creativity, human-machine collaboration, and exploration of new formats and applications for forward-thinking art and sound, resulting in their founding Sound Obsessed – a sonic archive, celebrating the journey and milestones of new innovation in audio media, and a community for hybrid artists exploring similar fields of creative research.
Portrait XO’s practice explores the entanglement of AI and human creativity – who we become, what we owe each other, and what gets lost or transformed in the exchange, and has earned accolades from the likes of Dadabots, Erik Alcock, Imogen Heap, Neumann, Neutone, Orchestral Tools, Roland, and Mixmag, as well as the Eurovision AI Song Contest Jury Vote for most creative use of AI in 2020, the Best Experiment award at VUT Indie Awards 2021, and the first German human-AI jazz prize ELBJAZZ in 2023.
Their performances and installations have been developed, presented, exhibited, and played at international festivals, residencies, and happenings such as ADE, Ars Electronica, BBA Gallery, CTM, Factory Berlin, Future Forum by BMW Welt, Github, IMS, KIKK Festival, Monom, Mutek, New Now Festival, Redbull Music, Re:publica, Reeperbahn Festival, Sonar+D, SXSW, Tech Open Air, the UN AI for Good Summit, ZKM/Hellerau Global Sonic Research Residency, and more.
Their latest album is announced for May 2026, the first singles are already out, touring dates will be announced soon.
